Steun the Shulgins

Alexander en Ann Shulgin zijn al tientallen jaren bekende ouderlingen op het gebied van psychoactief onderzoek. Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin, PhD, is een farmacoloog en chemicus, vooral bekend om zijn herontdekking van MDMA (XTC) en de ontwikkeling vna nieuwe psychoactieve chemicaliën, beschreven in de boeken TIHKAL en PIHKAL.

Alexander begon als senior research chemist in de Dow Chemical Company. In 1965 verliet Shulgin Dow om zich op zijn eigen interesses te richten en werd een onafhankelijk consulent.

Om zijn werk als consulent uit te voeren, verkreeg Shulgin een DEA Schedule I vergunning voor een onderzoekslaboratorium, waardoor hij in de gelegenheid was om normaal gesproken verboden drugs te bezitten en synthetiseren. Shulgin bouwde een klein chemisch synthese laboratorium op in een klein huisje achter zijn huis, wat hem een zeer autonome werksituatie gaf. Shulgin maakte van deze vrijheid gebruik door psychoactieve middelen te synthetiseren en testen. Over deze activiteiten schrijft hij uitvoerig in de klassiekers PIHKAL en TIHKAL.

In 1994, twee jaar na de publicatie van PIHKAL, nam de DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) zijn laboratorium in beslag. De DEA stelde dat zijn inventaris niet klopte en verzocht Shulgin zijn vergunning in te leveren. Hij kreeg daarnaast een boete van $25.000 voor het bezit van te analyseren monsters die hem door anonieme personen waren toegestuurd.

Richard Meyer, woordvoerder van de DEA in San Fransisco, stelde dat "Het is onze mening dat die boeken zo'n beetje kookboeken zijn voor het vervaardigen van illegale drugs. Agenten vertellen me dat ze in verboden laboratoriums die ze hebben opgerold exemplaren van die boeken hebben gevonden." Hiermee wordt de suggestie gewekt dat de publicatie van PIHKAL en het intrekken van Shulgin's vergunning met elkaar te maken hadden.

Het geld dat gebruikt werd om de boete te betalen was eigenlijk Alexander's pensioen dat hij door de jaren heen had opgebouwd. De gezagdragers kregen dit geld toen Alexander al in de zeventig was. Nu, vijftien jaar later, is hij in de tachtig en gaat het steeds minder goed met zijn gezondheid (in 2008 moest hij geopereerd worden om een defecte hartklep te vervangen). Hij noch zijn vrouw Ann heeft geld over om de doktersrekeningen te betalen.

De Shulgins hebben een grote collectie primair en secundair archiefmateriaal (boeken, artikelen enzovoorts) dat georganiseerd, gearchiveerd en publiekelijk beschikbaar gemaakt zou moeten worden. Erowid hoopt in 2010 voor zowel dit project als voor een medische hulpverlener voor Alexander $25,000 tot $50,000 in te zamelen. Dit geld zal onder andere gebruikt worden voor het scannen en verwerken van dit archiefmateriaal. Donaties kunnen gedaan worden via het Erowid Center of rechtstreeks aan de Shulgins.

There is evidence about US goverment involment in illegal drug trafficking, so if mr. Shulgin was guilty, it would be like he had stolen something and than judged by greater thief!

it wouldnt surprise me if the DEA tried to confiscate any donations sent the Shulgin's way. claim it was drug money or something and its evidence... i dont know, but its exactly the kind of thing the DEA would do.
they treat people like sh*t. most of the time INNOCENT people! just look at how they treated Howard Marks! its horrific! i bet EVERY member of the DEA has got massive god-complex.

the DEA mission is to spreak missery and enrich the executive officers and corrupted politicians with money and property stolen from innocent victims like mr Shulgin. They are a very big threat to humanity. the DEA is a terrorist organisation paid by the people they prey upon. Mr Shulging was helping us by creating substances that can help to enlighten us and that is something the american government really doesn't like. they want us brainwashed, watching tv the whole day and drinking lots of alcohol to fuck with us in every way their sick minds please. But they will never succeed entirely thanks to Mother Earth.

Psychedelics can never be erased or bannend completely by dictators and corrupted organisastions like the DEA. The Shulgins helped us a lot in this sense.

I was thinking... Considering the amount of money a lot of us spend on getting high, taking 10 dollars/Euro out of that fund and throwing it their way makes a very minor and probably unnoticeable dent in our lives, but collaboratively a huge benefit in theirs.

With that being said, I feel it's important from time to time to take a little of our getting high money and give it to the people who are doing good things for the lot of us. And this goes not just for the Shulgins, but any other people, groups or organizations that work on things we all care about.

It's important not just to spread the word, but to help out (financially) when you can. Sometimes the mental satisfaction of knowing you tried to help these people can be a high in its own way.
