10 aanwijzingen dat de drugsoorlog tot een einde komt

Wie op de hoogte is gebleven van de ups en downs van de wereldwijde legalisatie van drugs zal opgemerkt hebben dat 2009 in vele opzichten een heel positief jaar is geweest. Hoewel er tegenslagen waren in Nederland, Groot-Brittanië, Duitsland en Australië, moedigden de volgende 10 nieuwsberichten ons zeker aan optimistisch te blijven.

1) Drie voormalige Latijns-Amerikaanse presidenten noemen de drugsoorlog een mislukking (februari 2009)

2) Michael Phelps en zijn hijs uit een waterpijp die wereldnieuws werd (februari)

3) Obama's ministerie van justitie zegt "Geen invallen meer bij patiënten en hulpverleners in staten die wetten hebben voor medische cannabis" (maart)

4) Drop the Rock! New York's Draconische drugswetgeving van Rockefeller eindelijk gereformeerd (april)

5) Gouverneur Arnold Schwarzenegger nodigt mensen uit in debat te gaan over het legaliseren van cannabis: kiezers kunnen in 2010 hierover beslissen (mei)

6) Drug Czar van het Witte Huis roept op de drugsoorlog te staken (mei)

7) Mexico en Argentina beginnen met het decriminaliseren van cannabis en andere drugs (augustus)

8) De uitkomst is bekend: Portugal's decriminalisatie wetgeving van 2001 verminderde de overdracht van ziektes, verminderde het aantal overdosis gerelateerde doden en arrestaties, terwijl het gebruik van drugs niet toenam (august)

9) Ze komen er voor uit: "Stiletto Stoners" (succesvolle vrouwen die wiet roken) leggen uit wat ze fijn vinden aan marihuana (september)

10) Het legalisatiedebat komt uitgebreid aan bod in talloze TV programma's, kranten en bekende tijdschriften (herfst)

I agree with the list, but there are somethings which I think are far more crucial and significant than some listed here.

For example: one of which was on "repeal day" (the 75th anniversary of when the US repealed alcohol prohibition), I caught a couple US news stations openly discussing and reflecting on the paralleled drug war.

To me that's much more significant than say an athlete hitting the bong and defending his actions. Granted, I agree that everything on this list is somehow contributing to the fall of the drug war, there were some stronger points not mentioned.

Or am I way off and was the 75th ann. of repeal day celebrated in 2008?

#10 is definitely the one that makes me feel Cannabis use could be liberated in various places very soon.

As long as we don't keep quiet, and as long as we let it known that, you can make a million laws against human nature, but you're still going to have humans. You can't use the law to change human nature. Humans naturally desire mild-alteration and no law will ever change that - it will just turn true human beings into criminals. We will win eventually.

yes a very important update also to the Czech story is that the postponed debate about possesion has been conducted only a week later.
In Czech you can now hold the most common psychoactives without someone telling you you can't.
Limits are 15g cannabis; 2g of speed, 1g of cocaine and 1,5g of heroin. This is not punishable anymore.
Another example of how people finally realise prosecution is not the answer and act responsibly towards that!
This was Dec 14th. btw so also still 2009 :).

There are still to many policemen earning their bread and making a career by arresting youth smoking a joint, or pressing charges on possession (2-3 grams of ganja) with intention to distribute.:)
So mentioning the entheogens (wich I love and respect) in that story is an absurd.
As for me, future is darker than inside grobox when light is off.
We live in a democracy (some kind) and we'll just have to countinue practising our democratic choise and that is HIDING.

De Hypocrisie v/d war on drugs wordt steeds meer bloot gelegd. De zogenaamde christelijke partijen willen een verbod op Weed. wat nooit haalbaar is gelukkig. Maar van de andere kant geven ze forse subsidies voor bierboten: http://www.nrc.nl/economie/article2458628.ece/Utrecht_krijgt_elektrische_bierboot

Het enige wat Christelijk is aan deze partijen zijn hun dogma's die de waarheid van het licht niet kunnen dragen. Naastenliefde is hen vreemd(Denk aan medische Marijuana).
Gelukkig loopt deze partij altijd als een schoothondje achter Amerika aan en zal Marijuana daar binnenkort gelegaliseerd zijn.

Although Denmark is a small country, I think that it is worth mentioning that a lot of progress has been made as far as raising awareness about the poitless afford to ban cannabis. Danish politicians debate heavely about a proposal to legalise cannabis for a trial period in efforts to end the current gang war that has been going on for the last year and a half. I should of course mention that the ethneogen Kratom (which I was personally a big fan of) has been prohibited.

I point that I think should be made is that besides the failed efforts to keep people form using drugs, the drug war is wrong because it interferes with a right to decide what we put in our own bodies. Sure some drugs are dangerous but so is the chainsaw my dad uses for cutting wood. I think that an important point in this debate is that people (should) have the right to decide over their own bodies.
